Avnet Embedded launches compact SMARC module family based on Intel® Atom® x7000E Series processors with up to eight cores

Stutensee, Germany – February, 2023 – Avnet Embedded is expanding its comprehensive SMARC™ product portfolio including announcing availability of the scalable MSC SM2S-ALN module family. These boards integrate an Intel® Atom® processors x7000E Series, Intel® Core™ i3 processor or Intel® Processors N Series (former codenamed “Alder Lake N”). Depending on processor type, the thermal design power (TDP) is between 6W and 15W providing less power dissipation. Two, four or eight cores are available to scale the CPU and graphics performance.

Typical applications of the scalable MSC SM2S-ALN module family include automation solutions, IoT systems, point-of-sales terminals, and medical equipment. Avnet Embedded allows an early access to the new Intel® Atom® x7000E processors with the ready-to-use SMARC modules and the adequate Board Support Package (BSP)..

Tim Jensen, Director of Product Innovation at Avnet Embedded, said: “Our new module family is designed to bring Intel’s new generation of Intel Atom processors including a pin-compatible Intel® Core™ i3 processor with up to eight CPU cores into the compact SMARC form factor. As leading manufacturer of innovative embedded modules we consistently expand our SMARC portfolio to offer our customers the optimized solution for their specific application.”

Avnet Embedded’s innovative embedded modules are developed in company-owned design centers and manufactured in its highly automated production facilities. The computer-on-modules are available long-term for at least 15 years to protect the customers’ system investments. In addition, the SMARC specification enables migrating applications to future technology upgrades.

Avnet Embedded also incorporates the Intel® Atom® x7000E Series processors into the COM Express™ Type 6 Compact form factor and announces the MSC C6C-ALN module family.

Technical specifications

Avnet Embedded’s scalable MSC SM2S-ALN SMARC module family can be equipped with various processors of the actual Intel® Atom® generation:

  • Intel® Core™ i3-N305, eight-core, 1.0GHz/1.8GHz, 32EU, 9/15W
  • Intel® Atom® x7425E, four-core, 1.5GHz, 24EU, TCC, 12W
  • Intel® Atom® x7213E, two-core, 1.7GHz, 16EU, TCC, 10W
  • Intel® Atom® x7211E, two-core, 1.0GHz, 16EU, TCC, 6W
  • Intel® Processor N200, quad-core, 1.0GHz, 32EU, 6W
  • Intel® Processor N97, quad-core, 2.0GHz, 24EU, 12W
  • Intel® Processor N50, dual-core, 1.0GHZ, 16EU, 6W

The CPU architecture is based on Efficient-cores and the powerful Intel® UHD graphics with up to 32 Execution Units (EUs), as used by the 12th Gen Intel® Core™ processors, thus easing up application migration across Intel CPU performance and power ranges. The EUs support AI applications for intelligent future products. The modules support Intel’s OpenVINO™ Toolkit offering a comprehensive solution for optimizing and support of AI functionality.

The MSC SM2S-ALN module family can drive up to three independent 4k displays. The broad choice of interfaces includes 2x DisplayPort++, eDP 1.4b/MIPI-DSI/Dual-channel LVDS, PCIe Gen. 3, 2x USB 3.1 (10Gb/s), 6x USB 2.0, and Dual Gigabit Ethernet (Intel® i226) with up to 2.5GbE bandwidth. Mass storage is provided with the optional on-board up to 256GB eMMC memory and externally accessible via an SATA-III 6Gbps channel.

For network applications, the standard modules support Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) and Intel® Time Coordinated Computing (TCC). The boards are equipped with on-board LPDDR5-5200 memory with a maximum capacity of 16GB and optional in-band ECC capability.
