Avnet Embedded presents scalable SMARC module family based on i.MX 93 applications processors from NXP Semiconductors

Stutensee, Germany – November, 2022 – Avnet Embedded continues its long and successful partnership with NXP™ Semiconductors and presents the scalable MSC SM2S-IMX93 SMARC 2.1.1™ module family. The compact standard modules integrate NXP’s i.MX 93 applications processors with a typical design power of 2 – 4 Watts for low-power applications. The compact MSC SM2S-IMX93 module family expands Avnet Embedded’s very extensive SMARC 2.1.1 portfolio based on i.MX 8 or i.MX 6 processors from NXP with latest i.MX 9 Series technology.

Typical applications of the energy-efficient MSC SM2S-IMX93 module family include industrial automation like powerful industrial HMI systems, machine vision and control systems, and gateways. Additional applications are smart home and building automation solutions e.g. heat pumps, thermostats, and security systems. Furthermore, the compact SMARC modules can be installed in industrial transport and grid infrastructure solutions for example EV charging, environmental control equipment, and energy meter systems.

For evaluation and design-in of the new MSC SM2S-IMX93 SMARC 2.1.1 module family, Avnet Embedded provides a development platform, a starter kit and comprehensive design services. Support for Linux operating system is available, Android support is on request.

Avnet Embedded develops all embedded modules in its company-owned design centers. The products are manufactured in large quantities in highly automated production facilities in Germany.

Technical specifications:

Avnet Embedded’s powerful MSC SM2S-IMX93 SMARC 2.1.1 module family is highly scalable and equipped with i.MX 93 applications processors manufactured by NXP Semiconductors. The processors use a heterogeneous multicore architecture based on single-core or dual-core ARM® Cortex™-A55 cores up to 1.7 GHz, one ARM® Cortex™-M33 real-time processor up to 250 MHz and an efficient pixel pipeline to perform 2D graphics processing to realize cost-effective GUI solutions. The ARM® Ethos™-U65 microNPU (neural processing unit) with 256 MACs/cycle, enables developers to create more capable, cost-effective machine learning (ML) applications. The i.MX 93 processors deliver advanced security functionality with integrated EdgeLock® secure enclave to support energy-efficient edge computing. NXP’s innovative Energy Flex architecture ensures a long battery lifetime in portable systems.

The compact MSC SM2S-IMX93 modules provide up 2GB of fast and low power LPDDR4 memory technology with inline ECC support, combined with up to 256GB eMMC Flash memory.

Various interfaces for embedded applications such as Dual Gigabit Ethernet, USB
2.0, CAN-FD, dual-channel LVDS or MIPI-DSI, and MIPI-CSI for connecting a camera are available. An on-board wireless module is provided as assembly options. The 82 x 50 mm compact modules are specified for the extended temperature range from -40 to +85 °C.
