Avnet Embedded announces options for rapid evaluation of OSM modules on existing SMARC platforms
Stutensee, Germany – November, 2022 – Avnet Embedded is pushing forward the rapid development of innovative OSM standard modules (Open Standard Module™) and offers special options for rapid evaluation of OSM prototypes.
For testing the first OSM samples, Avnet Embedded provides the SMARC™ adapter MSC SM2F-OSM-AD, which connects to the proven SMARC embedded platform MSC SM2-MB-EP1 from Avnet Embedded and allows immediate evaluation of the interfaces and technical features of the OSM modules. All interfaces, which are not available on the SMARC connector for example additional GPIOs, have been realized separately via additional connectors on the adapter board.
As an evaluation board and fast SBC solution, Avnet Embedded offers the standardized SimpleFlex OSM carrier board MSC OSM-MB-EP5 for the three OSM module sizes Size-S, Size-M and Size-L. The SimpleFlex platform in 146 x 80mm form factor is easily configurable without requiring additional development time, unnecessary interfaces can be avoided.
MSC SM2F-OSM-AD with module
The MSC OSM-MB-EP5 carrier board offers M.2 Key E for wireless modules, 2 x Gigabit Ethernet, power supply via USB-C, a Microbus slot for various I/O modules, MIPI-CSI for camera and LVDS/DSI/RGB display support. The SimpleFlex OSM carrier board MSC OSM-MB-EP5 is not only suitable for evaluating the compact OSM modules, but can also be deployed as a ready-to-use solution in applications with smaller quantities
OSM modules are solderable, postage stamp-sized computer-on-modules that are particularly space-saving and provided in a pre-tinned LGA package. The solder-on modules can be soldered directly onto the PCB without a connector and are suitable for a fully automated soldering, assembly and test process. By reducing the number of production steps and eliminating the connector, significant cost savings can be achieved compared to previously existing module form factors. As a result, the OSM modules are also optimally suited for large quantities. The solder-on modules are particularly rugged and resistant to shock and vibration. Most module variants are specified for the extended temperature range.
Avnet Embedded’s actual OSM module families MSC OSM-MF-IMX8MINI and MSC OSM-MF-IMX8NANO are based on i.MX 8M Mini and i.MX 8M Nano SOCs from NXP™ Semiconductors. The system-on-chips integrate Arm® Cortex™-A53 processors with up to four cores. The compact size-M (30 x 45mm) modules are mainly used in industrial applications that are cost-sensitive and need small dimensions. Typical examples include optimized IoT systems such as small gateways, industrial control systems and home automation solutions.
